2008 from Washington State Prep Cross-Country Championships team taught the Gig Harbor High School Girls "a lesson very disappointing to know how close is close enough.
After winning 3 consecutive state titles in the state championship competition 4A, Gig Harbor fell 1 point short in the team competition Saturday (11-8-08) at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, the solution for the wild card.
Had he won, the girls have created the Washington state record with 4 consecutive titles. Only two other teams in 4A state history have won 3 titles row. Bellarmine Prep accomplished the feat in 1977, 1978 and 1979, and Issaquah matched the feat in 1985, 1986 and 1987.
So close yet so far. Eastlake High School of Sammamish Tide runners cut from 97 to 96. Eastlake runners finished 14, 15, 18, 24, 25, 40 and 72. Gig Harbor runners finished 1st, 16th, 17th, 30th, 33rd, 44th and 48th. Each team has 7 runners, but only the top 5 runners finish in the team figure scoring.
From the corridor Eastlake's 5th scoring was 25, it did not matter that Gig Harbor last two runners finished 44th (sophomore Kelly Williams at 20:05) and 72 (senior Ashley Horton at 20:42).
Senior Alyssa Andrews of Gig Harbor won the 5000 meter run (3.1 miles) from 18:00 flat to become the champion state 4A. She could have done more for his team. Sophomore Brittany Kealy was 16th and junior center Erin was 17, both finished in 19:21 and did his job. Sophomore Danie Moon was 30 in 19:47 and senior Claire Betterbed was 33 in 19:50.
Gig Harbor could have won his 4th consecutive title and set a new record, Danie while Luna had run 2 seconds faster and finished 28th instead of 30, or Claire Betterbed had run 3 seconds faster in the 3.1 km and finished in 31st place of 33. Two seconds faster or 3 seconds faster, it seems that much unless you are running the race of 3.1 miles at the highest level of competition.
Result for the girls Saturday Gig Harbor stresses the importance of scoring runners 4 and 5 during the competition. When running back it seems as if it diminishes the value of your effort when in fact, its importance becomes more valuable with every step they take. Reaching deep down and spend a couple of runners close Goal can be the difference between winning a state title and lost a state title.
Eastlake made a great race and its spread was only 29 seconds between the classifier score and last name. Propagation Gig Harbor was 1:40, 71 seconds more. This is one reason why the progress of the team emphasizes cross-country. His best runner does not have to finish among the 10 or 13 riders to win a state championship.
Coach Patty Law and her daughters were very disappointed to say the least. However, Gig Harbor was surprisingly good considering that only one runner eventual state champion Alyssa Andrews returned from last year's championship status team. His arrival was a testimony of the Law on training and tremendous winning tradition Gig Harbor girls have built.
Tide girls preceded her State satisfy end up earning his 4th consecutive West Central District III championship in the American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood. Alyssa Andrews won the individual title in 17:45 for Gig Harbor to take the title.
The Gig Harbor boys had a tougher go of it in the state 4A race, finishing 7th overall with 192 points. Mead High Spokane School won the title with 98 points, shelving its 14th state championship in cross-country. Mead runners finished 8-9-24-27-30 with a 30-second statement.
Mead is legendary in Washington state, producing more distance runners than any other school. Mead won 9 state titles consecutive from 1988 to 1996, and added 3 more titles from 2000 to 2002, with 12 titles in 15 years. That is the dominant position of any rule.
Gig Harbor-top sorter boy junior Conner Peloquin was 10th in 15:55. It was followed by Robby Ubben second year in 37th at 16:31, senior Chris Adgar-Beal in 43rd at 16:35, Junior Spencer Payne in 49th at 16:40, senior Alex Sundell in 53rd at 16:44, senior Nate Funkhouser in 88th at 17:29 and second Kalbrener Casey in 89th at 17:30.
Clearly, girls rule in Gig Harbor at the time.
